Mediation Profile

Jon is an experienced and accredited mediator, trainer, facilitator, and supervisor. He served as a police officer in the UK and Hong Kong where he specialised as an Inspector in staff training. His Masters degree focused on examining crime and violence issues in the workplace and he subsequently completed a Graduate Diploma in Dispute Resolution (Mediation) and a Certificate in Professional Supervision. He is a LEADR trained mediator, assessor and coach and is certified by the NZ Courts as a facilitator of violence intervention programmes and restorative justice conferences.

Following his police service Jon worked as a manager in both the public and private sectors. Since 2003 he has been self-employed as an independent mediator working mainly in workplace and family matters as well facilitating restorative justice conferences. He has been the Facilitator and Disputes Advisor to Victoria University of Wellington since 2003 where he provides an independent conflict resolution service to the University community. He also delivers training in the public and private sector and has delivered over a hundred workshops on negotiation and difficult conversations. Since 2005 Jon has been part of a project team working on the development of restorative justice facilitator training and accreditation for the New Zealand Ministry of Justice, and since 2008 he been delivering restorative justice facilitator training on behalf of the Ministry.

Jon has been working full-time in the area of conflict resolution since 2001 and operating as a mediator since 2003. He has mediated in excess of 100 mediations mainly in the areas of workplace, family and community matters. He has also facilitated violence intervention programmes and restorative justice conferences for over six years.

My training and background is as a facilitative, problem-solving mediator. However, I tend to vary my style according to the needs and wants of the parties. I see mediation as an opportunity for the parties to learn new ways of interacting and I try to ensure that not only do the parties settle their dispute but that they also learn something about themselves and each other as a result of the process. Even in very difficult situations I try to ensure that the parties at least understand each other’s perspectives better as a result of the mediation meeting.

Areas of particular focus include: Workplace Family Community Restorative justice Professional supervision of mediators
