Datuk Lau's career stretched back to 1975 when he qualified with a Barrister-at-Law from the Inns of Court, London. Earlier, he obtained his Bachelor of Laws Degree ( 1973) and Master of Laws Degree ( 1974) from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) University of London.

On returning to Malaysia, he was appointed the First Class Magistrate with the Judiciary Department in Sarawak , Malaysia between 1975 - 1977, after which he went into private law practice and has since been the Senior partner of a legal firm for over 32 years in Sibu. He was appointed a Notary Public since 1992 , and a Commissioner for Oaths in Malaysia since 1981.

At the Corporate scene, he was the former Executive Chairman of a Public Listed company, Samanda Holdings Berhad for 4 years between 1995 – 1998 ( now known as WTK Holdings Berhad). 

His other Involvement - 
Former President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, Malaysia 1999 – 2001;
Former Senator of the Malaysian House of Senate between 1998 – 2005;
Former Municipal Councillor of the Sibu Municipal Council for 18 years between 1981 - 1998. 

He currently sits on the Board of Directors of two Malaysian Public Listed Companies in Malaysia.

He has been appointed to be the Mediator in cross-border commercial disputes in Perth, Western Australia and in Cebu City, Philippines. He continues to play an active role with the Fremantle Mediation Group ( www.fremantlemediation.org.au), and has been receiving regulars referrals from there. He also continues to speak in ADR conferences both in Malaysia and overseas.

Generally I use a process-oriented style, i.e. facilitative mediation style , but sometimes it is blended with some conciliatory approach , as the circumstances require.

Datuk Lau continues to accept appointment as an Arbitrator and Mediator both in Malaysia and Australia, and he has been appointed in a number of dispute cases, which have involved construction, real estate, shipping, and commercial disputes.

Negotiable and services can be offered pro bono where appropriate.
