Amending Programs

This page explains to organisations with existing Qualifying Assessment Programs or Certified Mediator Training Programs how they may amend the details for their organisation or for those programs.

Amend Contact Details

To amend the contact details associated with your organisation’s program listing on the ‘Find a Program‘ page, please email IMI Support with your organisation’s new details.  This is specifically for cases where your organisation has (a) moved (b) otherwise changed the contact details of existing IMI-approved branches.

Organisations are able to update the contact details associated with the profile they use to log into the IMI website themselves by navigating to their profile (www.imimediation.org/member/), clicking the small ‘gear’ icon, and then selecting ‘edit profile’.

Amend Scope of Activities

In certain cases, an organisation with existing QAP or CMTP may wish to amend the scope of its activities.  Examples and courses of action are outlined below.

SituationAction
An existing organisation with approved QAP or CMTP wishes to add new or additional branches of its organisation to its approved program, with these additional venues offering the same program, within the same country/culture, as the currently approved QAP or CMTP.An amended QAP or CMTP application should be submitted, including complete details of the new locations and associated contact details.  The amended application should pay particular attention to how quality standards will be maintained across the organisation’s locations.  The existing program may be downloaded from your QAP’s QAP Listing on the ‘Find a QAP’ page. If your organisation originally applied online, then your existing link can be used to update the program with new details.
An organisation with existing QAP, competent to assess IMI Certified Mediators, wishes to become a MA-QAP and additionally certify IMI CertifiedMediation AdvocatesThe organisation should complete a new MA-QAP application, specifically for Mediation Advocacy.
An organisation with existing QAP wishes to offer IMI Specialisations, such as Inter-cultural Certification (ICQAP), Online Dispute Resolution, or Investor-State Dispute ResolutionThe organisation should complete an application to offer the desired specialisation(s).  Multiple specialisations may be applied for at the same time.
An organisation with existing QAP wishes to increase the scope of its activites, for example, by offering training to the level of ‘IMI Qualified’ in addition to IMI CertificationThe organisation must complete an IMI Certified Mediator Training Program application.
An IMI Certified Mediator Training Program wishes to offer IMI CertificationThe organisation must complete a QAP application.
An organisation with existing QAP or CMTP wishes to reduce the scope of services or certifications offeredIMI Support should be contacted.

Add branches or competence in additional countries or cultures

Where an organisation conducts its activities across multiple countries and wishes its programs to be certified as a QAP or CMTP in countries or cultures that were not part of its current approved Qualifying Assessment Program or Certified Mediator Training Program, an amended QAP/CMTP application must be completed.  The amended application must be explicit as to how the organisation will maintain the required quality standards across geographies and/or cultures.

It is not possible for an organisation with a QAP/CMTP to claim an IMI-recognised presence in a country or culture outside of those identified in the original application to IMI to register a QAP/CMTP, unless the organisation has a genuine nexus with the new country or culture.  Examples of what would constitute a sufficient nexus include an office and a critical mass of staff who are from the country, or know its language and culture well.  This knowledge and/or presence must be described in the (amended) QAP/CMTP application.

Situations where extraterritorial competency will not be approved include:

  • Where that organisation has no actual presence in that country.  For example, holding a post box address or contact information, while not having staff ‘on the ground’, is not considered to constitute having a presence in that country.
  • Where the organisation has teamed up with another local association that does not have an approved QAP/CMTP and does not itself have any local expertise or experience in mediation.

Organisations with QAPs and CMTPs may offer training in other countries and promote diversity in training, but neither this nor having a group of ‘graduates’ in a third country constitutes or will substantiate recognition of that organisation as having a local QAP or CMTP in that country.

This does not preclude organisations with QAPs/CMTPs holding training or assessment in the organisation’s home country/ies and providing support via the Internet, as in this situation, the program is still associated with the organisation’s home country and is not making a claim to extraterritorial effect.
