James is a Barrister whose legal practice, small business ownership and working for a Member of Parliament has given him experience of negotiating and mediating in both business and people focused environments. He is an advocacy and dispute resolution specialist whose practice has covered a wide variety of matters from commercial litigation and IP disputes to employment disputes and mortgage repossession claims. 

James has wide jurisdictional experience having practiced in England & Wales, the United States and Canada. Whilst in Canada he took part in numerous mediations under the compulsory mediation scheme in operation in Ontario. James’ UK practice includes both work as a neutral in mediations and for parties, including applications for Mediation directions from the English High Court. James also has experience as an arbitration assistant in Construction Arbitration, and has experience of advisory work relating to commercial and IP arbitrations in the USA and Europe. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration and is listed by Chambers and Partners as a leader in ADR.

James was a founder of Cordex ADR which became part of Talk Mediation, he has also been an advisor to local government bodies and MPs on ADR use, as well as taking an active role in the ADR committees of bodies such as INTA and the IBA. For 2014-15 he is the chairman of INTA's ADR committee.

James has work on cases before the English High Court, the English Court of Appeal, the House of Lords and Supreme Court of the UK, as well as the Canadian Supreme Court and the Ontario Court of Appeal.

James also Marshalled to: Lord Justice Aldous, Senior Appeal Justice of the Court of Appeal; Mr. Justice Laddie, Judge of the Chancery Division of the High Court of England & Wales; and to Mark Ockleton Chairman of the Immigration Appeal Tribunal.

A prolific author, James’ writing has been featured in inter alia; International Company and Commercial Law Review, Commercial Litigation Review, EIPR, Canadian Intellectual Property Journal, ABA IPL Section, et al.

James' focus is on commercial mediations and intellectual property based disputes. In addition he has conducted mediations in a wide variety of matters; from neighbour and family based disputes to construction, intellectual property and insurance claims of high value. First gaining accreditation in 2004, James has remained committed to expanding his mediation knowledge base attending courses in the USA, Switzerland and the UK from a range of providers. James has acted in mediations which required several sessions over an extended period as well as time limited mediations, court based, pro bono matters and disputes between international parties. A regular speaker and author of ADR materials; James has spoken on ADR, at, for example, the Global Summit of Corporate (In House) Counsel in Canada, and to regional practicioners in association with the Essex County Courts. As a former director of a mediation provider James is additionally knowledgeable of the process of administrating ADR services.

James adopts a flexible style in mediation adjusting to suit the party needs and the dispute. He has experience of mediation on a rights or interest based approach, and uses evaluative and facilitative analysis. James' first goal is always to understand what each party truly needs and what issues matter most, he then seeks to help all parties consider each other's position to aid in finding a mutually acceptable resolution.
