Mediation Profile

Certified as an international mediator since 2007, Aloysius has mediated disputes with values ranging from a few hundred dollars to more than USD1bn. Amongst Aloysius’ mediation clients are companies listed on the BSE, NYSE, SGX, SSE, and HSI, as well as charities, non-government organisations, and public sector entities.

A large part of Aloysius’ career was in public service and non-profits. In addition to having served as the Chief Executive Officer of Singapore International Mediation Centre, he was the General Counsel of the Singapore Institute of Technology where he also pioneered and led their Career Services Department. He was also appointed by the Ministry of Health to establish a Healthcare and Medical Disputes Mediation Unit where he led the resolution of a major disease outbreak.

Aloysius currently serves as a member of the International Mediation Institute’s Appraisal Committee. He is a Senior Faculty at the Singapore Mediation Centre and Singapore International Dispute Resolution Academy, and guest lectures at the National University of Singapore Law School.

Aloysius is a National University of Singapore Law School Research Scholar and a Public Service Commission Humanities Scholar. In addition to his first degree in law, he has a Master’s degree in Law from the NUS, and a Master’s degree in Education Leadership from Boston College Lynch Education School.

Outside mediation, Aloysius is best described as a spiritual, family-oriented, fitness fanatic. He has spent a year living in the rule of silence in a French Catholic monastery, co-owns a Montessori Kindergarten, and clears his mind through endurance sports.

Aloysius specialises in high stakes commercial mediations, particularly those involving parties from different cultures. Some of Aloysius’ more notable recent cases include resolving medical negligence allegations made against a major healthcare institution, settling professional claims against a major international consulting firm, facilitating negotiations between Chinese businesses over mining rights, determining the value of damaged luxury goods at a global logistic facility, and allocating assets in an acrimonious divorce between high net worth individuals.

Aloysius is on the International Panels of the Singapore International Mediation Centre and Japan International Mediation Centre in Kyoto. He has spoken at numerous ADR conferences around the world on the topic of hybrid dispute protocols and international mediation skills, and works closely with leading mediation institutions such as the Straus Institute of Pepperdine University Law School, the Delhi High Court Mediation and Conciliation Centre, the China Council for Promotion of International Trade Mediation Centre, and the Bali International Arbitration and Mediation Centre.

Aloysius is the recipient of the prestigious National University of Singapore Research Scholarship which he used to complete his Masters Thesis on, "Developing a Framework for Mediation Advocacy in Singapore". In addition to the Masters of Laws, he also holds a Masters in Education Leadership from Boston College.

Aloysius adopts a listen-first approach in dealing with his clients and negotiating partners. He is aware that litigation may be a real recourse to resolve a dispute and may be useful to convey one's seriousness about the matter. However, they involve high emotional and financial expense for disputants, and may not always offer practical outcomes that mediation avails.

Aloysius is sensitive and respectful of the stress and difficulties that parties may already have gone through before having approached him. The first priority for him hence is to fully understand the underlying concerns of all involved before he applies his experience to help parties shape a mutually advantageous solution. A strong advocate for mediation ethics, Aloysius holds himself up to the highest standards of professional integrity and skill in practice. He aims to maximise the potential benefits of the mediation process, not just in quickly achieving a confidential solution, but also in restoring relationships and equipping parties to resolve future conflicts on their own.
