Current Position & Background
GEORGE LIM, was called to the Singapore Bar in January 1982, and was appointed a Senior Counsel in 2010. He is a Consultant at Messrs Wee Tay & Lim LLP, Advocates & Solicitors George was President of the Law Society of Singapore between 1998 – 9, and is a founder member of the Society’s Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, which provides free legal representation to accused persons who are unable to afford a lawyer. George did his training in mediation at CEDR, UK (1996) and Harvard Law School (2001). In 1997, he helped to set up the Singapore Mediation Centre (SMC). George sits on the Board of SMC, and has been mediating cases regularly at the Centre since 1997. He has helped SMC train lawyers and judges in mediation for the Philippine Judicial Academy, Malaysian Bar Council, Thai Judiciary, Fiji Judiciary & Ministry of Employment, Dubai International Financial Centre, Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution, Hongkong Healthcare Service and the Myanmar Judiciary. In January 2009, George was elected the first Chairman of the Asian Mediation Association (AMA). In 2103, he co-chaired a Working Group appointed by Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon and the Ministry of Law to make recommendations on developing Singapore as a centre for international commercial mediation. In March 2014, George was appointed the Deputy Chair of the Singapore International Mediation Centre. Other appointments or positions held by George include :- • Dispute Resolution Counsellor, National Electricity Market of Singapore • Panel Member, Singapore International Arbitration Centre • Advisory Board Member, Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore • Director, Singapore Institute of Legal Education • Member, Pro Bono Management Committee, Law Society of Singapore In 2014, George was identified by the International Who’s Who of Commercial Mediation as being among 298 of the world’s leading commercial mediators.
Practice Areas
Since 1997, I have mediated cases involving the following types of disputes :- • banking claims • multiparty construction disputes • partnership/joint venture break-ups • estate/probate disputes • medical negligence claims • family or relational disputes; and others
Mediation Style
Generally facilitative, although I have at the request of parties, adopted a more evaluative approach, using reality testing questions.
Mediation Experience
I mediate regularly at the Singapore Mediation Centre. I have conducted many multi-party claims as well as claims involving international parties in excess of S$10m. My success rate is about 80%. I also represent parties in mediations, as counsel.
