Current Position & Background

My professional life began in 1975, in the Medical field (neuropsychiatry), and only reached Mediation in the 90’s trough a multidisciplinary path that includes psychoanalysis, Family Therapy, Sociology, Politics and Culture, and Business Management. The contact with this variety of fields of expertise and scenarios over the years, allow me, today, to transit through social extremes – from the business world with its complex issues and relations, which demands real time decision making, to the voluntary work, in a less favored social and economic scenarios.

I design and coordinate dialogue processes that seek the mapping and prevention of crisis, change management and conflict resolution. I am used to work solo and in pairs with a professional of a different area of expertise, aiming a specific technical approach and an interdisciplinary viewpoint.

Currently I am CEO of MEDIARE Dialogue and Decision Making Processes as well as Senior Judicial Mediator in Rio de Janeiro State Court. I also integrate CONIMA – The National Council of the Institutions of Mediation and Arbitration as Mediation Director.

As Short-Term Consultant on the Mediators panel of the World Bank for Latin America, I am responsible for the Brazilian institutions related to the bank. I also integrate a variety of Mediator panels of different and renowned chambers. I am an Accredited Mediator of the Center for Effective Dispute Resolution – CEDR and Advanced Mediator of the ICFML – “Instituto de Formação e Certificação de Mediadores Lusófonos” i.e. the “Portuguese-Speaking Mediators’ Training and Accreditation Institute and IMI – International Mediation Institute; also, member of the International Center for ADR of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC-Brazil), as well as of the Brazilian Arbitrage Committee Study Group on Corporative Mediation.

Mediation Style

Even though I am based in Brazil, all my Mediation training and education was with international professionals. Therefore, I prefer to not entirely follow one school of mediation – Harvard, Transformative, Narrative – instead, I use a mix of the best practices of each one of them. Accordingly, in 2014, I wrote a book entitled “Mediation Tool Box – practical and theoretical contributions”, in which you may find different theoretical approaches. As I am used to work in different cultural contexts, I also customize language and proceedings.

The prepare and mapping of each mediation (parties involved, their points of view, positions, interests, values, objective and subjective agendas) are always a part of my work. I use both private and joint meetings, regarding the necessity and the cultural demands as well as work field.

I attach great importance in working with lawyers who I consider a fundamental part of the conflict resolution team.

The preparation, the active listening, the identification of stakeholder’s convergence of interests, the helping in developing alternative solutions and options execution, always aiming consensus, autonomy and tailored and mutual benefit solution, are all part of my work process as a Mediator, always seeking the maintenance of the parties’ social relation.
