The International Mediation Institute (IMI) invites experienced mediation practitioners, students and volunteers to mark their calendars and apply for the IBA–VIAC CDRC Mediation & Negotiation Competition taking place at the University of Vienna (Juridicum) from 2nd to 7th of July 2026. IMI is proud to support another edition of this premier competition.
About the CDRC Competition
CDRC Vienna is a globally recognised platform for experiential learning in mediation and negotiation. It brings together students, practitioners, academics, and dispute resolution experts from around the world to engage in realistic simulations of international commercial disputes. As mediation and negotiation become essential competencies in today’s interconnected global economy, the competition offers participants a unique opportunity to develop critical skills such as interest-based problem-solving, strategic negotiation, and cross-cultural communication all while retaining control over outcomes and preserving business relationships.:
IMI’s Continued Commitment to the CDRC Competition
The International Mediation Institute (IMI) has proudly supported the CDRC Mediation & Negotiation Competition for the past three consecutive years through events for professionals. We are pleased to confirm that IMI will continue its support of this flagship initiative, which plays a vital role in advancing international mediation education and practice.
In 2025, IMI co-hosted the IMI–CMS–CDRC International Mediation Evening in Vienna, featuring a panel discussion that explored the evolving role of mediation advocacy. The panelists also showcased the Intercultural Competence Criteria developed by IMI, highlighting their relevance to contemporary mediation practice and professional development.
Structure of the Competition
Over the course of six intensive days, student teams assume the roles of mediators and negotiators, working through complex dispute scenarios under the guidance of experienced expert assessors. Assessors provide constructive, practice-oriented feedback grounded in international best practice, making the competition a powerful learning experience. The competition is jointly organised by the International Bar Association (IBA) and the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC), and is proudly supported by the International Mediation Institute (IMI) and the Young Mediators’ Initiative (YMI).
Benefits of Participating in CDRC
Participation in CDRC offers substantial professional benefits, including practical skills development, exposure to global dispute resolution standards, networking with peers and leading experts, and enhanced career readiness for those pursuing international commercial dispute resolution.
Applications are now open for mediator and negotiator teams, expert assessors, and volunteers, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to, learn from, and be inspired by one of the field’s most respected educational initiatives.
