The loss of Michael saddens me deeply. His vision and spirit enriched the ADR community, as he understood that mediation is not just about resolving disputes but, more importantly, about building connections and fostering harmony in the world.
Michael’s efforts to establish the International Mediation Institute (IMI) as a user-driven organization were pivotal in promoting respect for and understanding of mediation. His writings and all other initiatives united mediators, referrals, advisors, educators, policymakers, and users, creating a collaborative spirit that defines our field.
Thanks to Bill Marsh’s kind recommendation, nearly two decades ago, Michael invited me to join the Independent Standards Commission (ISC). It allowed me to meet and work alongside so many esteemed professionals, amazing colleagues and wonderful friends, all inspired by Michael’s vision for promoting mediation worldwide.
As we celebrate his life and legacy, let us honor Michael by continuing his passion for mediation and building bridges in our communities. Standing shoulder to shoulder with founding fathers like Roscoe Pound and Frank Sander, Michael Leathes will always be remembered as a guiding light in our journey toward a more harmonious world.
