What an honour to count Michael as a friend, mentor and colleague. We met many years ago in the early days of the mediation movement and Michael and BAT were instrumental in the promotion of the Millennium Accord in 1998, a pledge signed by over 500 organisations globally to use mediation rather than resort to ARMS (Adversarial Resolution Methods). Michael was indeed a visionary and a leader in the field of mediation and early dispute resolution, fearlessly adopting this new approach in his role as corporate counsel and with his engaging presentations including his image of a block of cheese and 3 mice, encouraging everyone to understand the underlying principles of this alternative approach. Michael has been an inspiration to me in continuing to develop my work in this field, especially in promoting the skills, tools and mindset of mediation as being essential for the polarising and divisive times we are in. He was indeed a giant and I hope to do justice to him in continuing my work and standing on his shoulders.
