Serena Lee (President & CEO, CPR)

The staff and members of the CPR Institute are saddened to learn of the passing of our friend, mentor, and former board member Michael S. Leathes. Michael’s influence on our work was vast and deep—a voice of consciousness in mediation quality (and later exemplified in his founding of International Mediation Institute), a proponent of deal mediation, and as an advocate for using ADR as often and as frequently as possible based on his long and varied in-house legal experience. Michael was CPR’s first International Fellow and brought his expertise and knowledge to countless CPR events, gatherings, and writings. Michael had been active in CPR and had recently joined the Board of Directors when he told the CPR Annual Meeting in January 2003, “You need a culture of experimentation just to have fun in life.” He was one of the first proponents of mediation/arbitration and arbitration/mediation procedures, believing that parties should experiment with the various forms of dispute resolution. We are grateful to Michael for all of his significant contributions to CPR and the field of conflict resolution, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Michael’s family, colleagues and friends.
