The International Mediation Institute (IMI) is delighted to support ‘East Meets West: A Legal and Mediation Dialogue Between Portuguese-speaking Countries and Singapore’, during Singapore Convention Week 2024 led by the Institute for Certification and Training of Lusophone Mediators, an IMI Implementing Organisation!

The Singapore Convention Week is an event that aims to promote mediation as an effective method of dispute resolution. As a partner, ICFML is promoting a conference on the theme ‘East Meets West: A Legal and Mediation Dialogue Between Portuguese-speaking Countries and Singapore’.

This enriching event is structured around three engaging panel discussions. The first panel explores the legal frameworks of mediation in Lusophone countries and Singapore. The second panel examines how mediation is institutionalized within court systems and other government-managed frameworks. The third panel shares practical mediation experiences and innovative approaches from seasoned practitioners in Singapore, Brazil, and Portugal. This event aligns with the Singapore Convention’s goal of facilitating cooperative dispute resolution on a global scale.

It will be conducted online, free of charge, and will feature live simultaneous translation to Portuguese.

    Singapore Convention Week is a landmark annual event on mediation. It is being held since 2021. The Singapore Convention on Mediation (UN Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation) wad signed by 46 countries on 7 August 2019 in Singapore. The Convention entered into force on 12 September 2020. As of 24 October 2024, the Convention has 57 signatories and 14 parties. The 2024 edition of Singapore Convention Week stood out by holding various events, including the ICFML-promoted conference on the theme ‘East Meets West: A Legal and Mediation Dialogue Between Portuguese-speaking Countries and Singapore’. It comprised three enriching panel discussions. While the first panel analysed the legal frameworks of mediation in Lusophone countries and Singapore, the second panel discussed institutionalisation of how mediation within court systems and other government-run institutions., The third panel deliberated upon practical mediation experiences and new approaches from experienced dispute resolution professionals from Singapore, Brazil, and Portugal. It was really a cosmopolitan event that endeavoured to facilitate cooperative dispute resolution on a worldwide basis. Since it was virtual, free-of-charge, and had live simultaneous translation to Portuguese, it attracted audience from Anglophone, Lusophone as well as Francophone jurisdictions.
