About the Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre (PMAC)
The PMAC is a specialised dispute resolution body established within the framework of the Unified Patent Court (UPC). Its mandate is to facilitate the resolution of patent disputes through mediation, arbitration, and other appropriate dispute resolution processes.
The Centre forms an integral component of the institutional structure of the UPC, with its governance and finances embedded within the Court’s overall framework. It operates from two seats located in Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Lisbon (Portugal).
The PMAC provides institutional support and facilities for proceedings concerning patent disputes falling within the jurisdiction of the UPC, including disputes relating to European patents with unitary effect. By supporting the use of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) mechanisms, the Centre contributes to the UPC’s objective of providing efficient and flexible pathways for resolving patent disputes alongside judicial proceedings.
Parties may refer disputes to the PMAC either during ongoing litigation before the UPC or independently of court proceedings.Several IMI Certified Mediators are included in the list of mediators maintained by the PMAC.
Unified IP Summit 2026
In connection with the inauguration, the Unified IP Summit 2026 will take place on 1–2 June 2026 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ljubljana.
The summit is organised by the PMAC of the UPC, in collaboration with OxFirst and the University of Ljubljana, and will bring together members of the intellectual property and dispute resolution communities, including judges, arbitrators, mediators, technical experts, litigators, academics, and industry representatives.
