Mediation Profile

Ber is a accredited Advanced Mediator since 2001 and has worked as a mediator in Ireland. She brought to this profession knowledge, skills and experience from a wide arena of education, business, health care and law. In working as a mediator, she has a competence that is based on the integration of this experience into a new way of working. As a mediator, she works extensively within a wide range of areas including commercial, workplace, health care, bioethical, education and family mediation. She is also involved in supervision and reflective practice for mediators and other professionals. She has a wide experience of training mediators to associate, certificate and advanced mediator level within MII. She has held a number of senior management positions: Area manager with the Family Mediation Service in Ireland, where she had responsibility for the management of a wide case load, supervision and reflective practice a number of mediators in addition to mediating complex cases. Programme Director with the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science, Ireland where she had responsibility for an MBA in Health Care Management and Higher Diploma in Arts: Training and Quality Management,. In this capacity, she was involved in accreditation of programmes within a national and European framework; design and implementation of programmes and the quality assurance and monitoring.

In the decades that I have worked as a mediator, I have mediated in excess of 1,000 cases. In the first 5 years, the majority of these cases were in the family arena and in the latter three years they have been a combination of workplace, commercial, health care/bio-ethical and family. In the cases that I have mediated the majority of clients came to agreement and on those cases where there was occasion to follow through, the clients commented on the sustainability of the agreement. Organisations that have used me as a mediator return when there is a further organisational dispute. Equally, there are strong recommendations that go from one organisation to another. I have mediated in multi-national organisations, the public sector, government organisations and the private sector. My mediation skills are also requested in other sensitive areas, such as evaluations of programmes for vulnerable people and facilitation of sensitive business issues.

My style of mediation is predominately one that is reflectively based, using the transformative model of mediation With this reflection, I bring a logical thought process in a way that supports the discussion of those in conflict. This facilitates clients in discussing their issues, to see their issues through a lens different to the one they come to the room with. My structured approach in enabling people to reach options helps clients to have successes in areas that supports them making more difficult decisions and ultimately reaching resolution.

Workplace Mediation - mediating issues such as bullying, harassment, interpersonal disputes, team disputes. Commercial Mediation - mediating issues such as contract disputes, director disputes, inter-organisational disputes. Health Care & Bioethical mediation - mediating issues such as inter-professional disputes; disputes on patient care etc. Campus mediation - mediating issues such as inter-student disputes, academic disputes, research disputes. Family mediation - mediating issues such as divorce/separation, elder care, sibling disputes. Internal Mediation Teams - supporting organisations in implementing internal mediation teams.

Training and Education

 

2001: Mediation Education & Training : after initial mediation training, I spent one year as an apprentice mediator working under supervision as a mediator. On completion of this, I became a practitioner mediator with the Mediators Institute Ireland 2000: BCL (Law) UCC - where I qualified in Labour Law, Employment Law, Contract Law, Family Law, Property Law 1997 Masters in Education - where I developed skills and competence in facilitation and contemporary methods of working with people.

I have trained many mediators in Ireland to both certified and Practitioner Mediator level with the Mediators Institute Ireland. This training has been given to An Garda Siochana (Irish Police Force), Multi-national Companies, solicitors, Health Care Professionals etc. In addition, I teach programmes at Masters level on Reflective and Professional Practice; Creative and Critical Thinking, Management of Training and Human Resource Development.
