Feedback digest by IMI Support, 28 Aug 2018 Reviewer: Delma Sweeney, Programme Director, Mediation & Conflict Intervention, Dept. Business and Law, National University of Ireland Maynooth Ph. 00353 1 7086635 I have known Joe Behan and his mediation practice since the year 2000 when we started our mediation conversations. Since that time, I have had the experience of co-mediated a number of disputes with him in the interpersonal and family areas, and of acting as consultant for Joe in reviewing ethical and practice issues in his mediation practice. In 2004 I wrote a recommendation on his behalf for the accreditation Chairperson for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, in which I said that he demonstrated a high level of skill, intuition and empathy alongside an ability to adapt and develop the mediation process that matched the client’s needs in the circumstances of his dispute. In another co-mediation, I referred to his strength in being strategic in managing conflict and unrealistic expectations with interventions of reality testing, questioning and reframing. I went on to conclude that Joe was a thoughtful practitioner with a keen grasp of the conflict dynamics in different kinds of dispute and that I would have had no hesitation in recommending him as a mediator. In co-mediation and in practice consultation I have experienced how he engages in a positive rapport with clients, develops a creative atmosphere, is strategic in his interventions, maintains an ethical practice and provides an excellent service to clients. Clients have a high degree of satisfaction with the mediation service Joe provides. Since that time, he has gone on to develop his practice as a commercial and family mediator with Medius Commercial Mediators and latterly with Behan Dispute Resolution, where he is in partnership with Ruth Behan and with whom I understand he co-mediates both commercial and family disputes. Joe has been engaged by me as a lecturer and facilitator on a number of my courses over the last few years in both NUI Maynooth and University College Dublin. I am also aware that he acts as a tutor and assessor for the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and for private mediation training which he carries out with Behan Dispute Resolution. I have read references by third parties on his abilities on mediations over the years and I am ad idem with the references that I have seen from a variety of different people including Environmental (Ecological) NGO Core Funding Limited, Sheehan & Co., Solicitors, O’Leary Maher Solicitors and Eugene F. Collins Solicitors. Joe has been engaged separately in interpersonal training programmes where he has developed his interpersonal and reflecting skills to enhance his abilities and characteristics as a mediator. Recent feedback from a range of mediation clients, five in total, with whom Joe has worked, consistently rates him highly. One of whom recommended him as a mediator to assist with disputes that “require able and sensitive mediation skills,” Others commented on the “most professional manner” in which Joe and his co-mediator conducted the case. A wide range of mediation skills receiving praise from clients, has emerged from feedback received by Joe, however the professionalism with which Joe and his co-mediator conduct themselves is a key strength and regular source of comment by clients. A very high percentage of clients are willing to use his services again and recommend him as a mediator. I have found no negative comments in his feedback and have agreed to be his reviewer without hesitation.
