As a Singapore International Mediation Institute Level 1 accredited mediator, I recognise the value from collaboration and party self-determination that mediation promotes. In an increasingly globalised world, the ability for mediation to assist across cultures and jurisdictions also strikes me as a practical tool for effective and efficient dispute resolution. As a young mediator living in Singapore, the Singapore Convention on Mediation highlights the rising relevance of mediation and how mediators with a legal background can help to spearhead mediation in a range of disputes and better uphold the enforceability and legitimacy of mediation agreements. I believe that wearing the dual hat of a legal professional and young mediator can positively influence the way clients evaluate their dispute options, in turn facilitating the choice of more amicable win-win outcomes that can satisfy parties' interests in a more creative and flexible approach.
