What an irreplaceable loss! That mediation wears the cloak of international acclaim today and has found its way into the natural vocabulary of most lawyers including the lexicon of judges is due largely to the dogged commitment of Michael Leathes. The mediation and dispute resolution community has truly lost a phenomenon whose contribution will remain evergreen. Not only did Michael write the foreword to my first book on mediation well over a decade ago, he was my number one ideas partner on projects, dreams and endless possibilities of mediation in the world. Nothing ever fazed Michael. It was a real pleasure co-mediating with Michael twice and sharing panels with him at conferences. My memories of vacation with family in Windsor is laden with coffee sessions with Michael who made it a point to visit with me and have us spend quality time exchanging thoughts and dreams. Towards immortalizing Michael and his life defining passion, I will like us to give some thoughts to establishing the “Michael Leathes Mediation Centre” and possibly an annual Michael Leathes Mediation Conference with the first being in 2025; perhaps on August 14. My deepest condolences to his lovely wife and children.
