Mediation Profile

In 15 years as a humanitarian professional I experienced first-hand how mediation can literally save lives at times of war in countries like Syria, Afghanistan and Sudan. This is why I specialised in mediation, joining the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network and becoming an IMI Qualified mediator registered with the Italian Ministry of Justice. Mediation is not only a passion I increasingly came to appreciate overtime. Mediation is what I consistently prepared for over the last few years. I strongly believe that widening and strengthening our preparation as mediators is a responsibility towards the parties we are trying to help, as they deserve to be supported at the best of our capacity. And this is what I intend to continue doing as I further progress in my mediation career.

In Syria since 2015, I have just ended my assignment as Country Director of the Norwegian Refugee Council, where over the years I represented the aid community in Syria, being their spokesperson with the Government of Syria and in a number of high-level events in European capitals.

I became a member of the Mediterranean Women Mediators Network in 2019, where I am still playing an active and transformative role on gender equality, peace and security.

I am currently doing consultancies and research on mediation, war and inequality and international sanctions, while investing further in my own competences and starting off my career as mediator.

This year I became an associate of the School of Development, Innovation and Change (SDIC), IMI Qualified Mediator, a registered mediator with the Italian Ministry of Justice and I am studying to become a Certified Global Sanctions Specialist with ACAMS.

I am a professional with almost 15 years overseas experience with International Non-Governmental Organisations in Ethiopia, Syria, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Darfur. In these countries, I supported peace and reconciliation, with particular focus on process design, gender and inclusion and transitional justice, through leadership and management of aid interventions funded by a wide range of foreign governments (i.e. Norway, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, EU, US).

Training and Education

I hold two degrees in Development and Cooperation Studies from the University of Bologna and a Master of Science in Forced Migration from the University of Oxford. My theoretical knowledge is grounded on those studies and strengthened by negotiations and mediation’s courses I completed, organised by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Women in International Security, the Institute for International Affairs, the London School of Economics, the Durham University and the Swiss Federal Department for Foreign Affairs.

This path led me this year to become a Qualified Mediator by the International Mediation Institute and registered mediator with the Italian Ministry of Justice.

I am currently studying to become Certified Global Sanctions Specialist (CGSS) with ACAMS, given the relevance this topic has in today's realities.

Publications

I have continuously refined my analytical skills by contributing to reports and studies. For example, in my last position with NRC, I authored, co-authored, revised or contributed to a number of studies, which remained private to inform behind closed doors negotiations -35 on housing, land, property and civil documentation rights; eight inter-agency ones on humanitarian access, coordination and sanctions- in partnership with the EU, UN and other INGOs.

Most of my analytical work has been produced for private advocacy and is protected by confidentiality due to the sensitivities of the contexts I performed in. However, it is available on request upon pledge of confidentiality and no further dissemination.
