I would like to become a mediator/ mediation advocate. This opportunity will allow me to practice and build the skills I have learned during my law education and work experience. 

My qualifications are: 1. Pearl River Delta Academy of International Trade and Investment Law Scholarship from Peking University School of Transnational Law and Institute of European Studies in Macau; 2. Fellow of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators; 3. Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators; 4. Accredited Tribunal Secretary of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC); 5. LLM in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution (with Credit) and General Mediation Training Course from City University of Hong Kong; 6. LLM in International Economic Law (GPA 4.0 for Independent Research) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK); 7. Summer Undergraduate Research Programme (GPA 4.0) from CUHK; and 8. LLB (2.1) from University of Sussex.

Several articles of mine have been published, the latest being “Mak, H. W. Charles, (2018) Drafting Dispute Resolution Clauses- Four Main Guiding Principles that Drafters Should Observe, Young Arbitration Review, 31. pp.50-56”.

Recently, I have been admitted as a member of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) Tribunal Secretary Panel. Also, I am the first Chinese to be admitted to the panel.

My practical experience includes: 1. Mini-pupil at: Prince’s Chambers, 9 Stone Buildings, Barristers' Chambers (London), Des Voeux Chambers, and Alexandra Chambers; 2. Summer Intern (Advisory Team) at Intellectual Property Department of the Hong Kong Government; 3. Legal Intern at HKIAC; and 4. Judicial Marshal at the HM Courts & Tribunals Services (Hove, United Kingdom).

Moreover, I worked as a Researcher at the Legal Media Group of Euromoney Institutional Investor. In that role, I am responsible for undertaking research into the legal markets of the Asia-Pacific region including interviewing leading legal practitioners and their clients (by phone and face-to-face) in a range of countries and analysing cases. I also made law firm’s ranking tables for Asia-Pacific region.

I was the President of the Graduate Law Student Association at CUHK and of University of Sussex Law Society, and a member of the Panel of Film Censorship Advisers of the Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration. My desire has always been to serve the law and international mediation community.

I respectfully put myself forward as motivated, dedicated, hardworking and able to make the most of an opportunity to pursue the career in international mediation. My wealth of knowledge in the legal sphere would make me a competent mediator. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I attended the University of Sussex in United Kingdom (LL.B. (Hons)), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (LL.M. in International Economic Law), and the City University of Hong Kong (LL.M.Arb.D.R.). I am a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators and the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland. I am also a member of the Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution. I earned accreditation as a tribunal secretary at the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Recently, I was admitted as the first member of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA) Tribunal Secretary Panel from Hong Kong and China.

My publications have appeared in Young Arbitration Review, International Journal of Law and Legal Jurisprudence Studies, Law and Politics Book Review, Journal of Science, Humanities and Arts, NILS Law Review, and in various websites. His current research interests include international investment law, arbitration, and international dispute resolution.

I am eager to serve the community. I have been appointed a member of the Panel of Film Censorship Adviser of the Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration, Consumer Liaison Group of Centre for Food Safety, and Hongkong Post Philately Liaison Group.

I am fluent in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
