Mediation Profile

Joel Evans is currently working as an Assistant Adjudicator in the In-House Adjudication team at CEDR.

He has received mediation and conflict resolution training from some of the world's most experienced dispute resolution practitioners.

He participated in the 2018 New Dialogues Future Leaders Progam hosted by Allen & Overy. The New Dialogues Program is a course taught by leading conflict resolution specialists from CEDR and it focuses on listening skills and the handling of difficult conversations.

He recently received further training in active listening and conflict resolution from CEDR's In-House Training Team. 

For the past two years, he has judged the London regional rounds of the National Student Legal Negotiation Competition organised by CEDR. He recently participated as a judge for the 2021 IMSG Singapore International Mediation Competition.

Prior to working at CEDR, Joel completed internships at King and Wood Mallesons, Gall Solicitors, and Temple Chambers in Hong Kong. 

In addition to his work at CEDR, he acts as Tribunal Secretary/Assistant in International Arbitrations and he is a Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) Accredited Tribunal Secretary.

Joel is a member of the Digital Committee at CyberArb - a multidisciplinary international legal and tech initiative that focuses on the intersection between cybersecurity and international arbitration/Alternative Dispute Resolution.

He is a Special Advisor to the Editorial Team at the Tsinghua China Law Review (TCLR) - the first law student-run, English-language legal journal published by a mainland Chinese university. The journal publishes scholarly articles and notes by leading authors on China on a bi-annual basis. 

Joel speaks English and Chinese (putonghua).


Joel holds a  B. A (Hons) degree in Politics from Loughborough University, an M.Sc. degree in China and Globalisation from King's College London, and an LL.M. degree in International Arbitration and Dispute Settlement from Tsinghua University in Beijing China. 

During his time at Tsinghua University, he participated in the 2019 CIETAC Cup held in Beijing as the coach for the university team.

Whilst at Tsinghua he completed and successfully defended a 10,000-word thesis on the use of mediation in investor-state disputes.

He recently attended the Hague Academy of International Law's Winter Course on International Law and Summer Courses in Public and Private International Law.

Joel is currently in the process of gaining mediation experience and is working towards IMI Certification.

He is a specialist in cross-cultural communication and adds value to mediations involving disputes between parties from different cultures and backgrounds. 

He offers particular expertise in disputes involving Chinese and Western parties.

Joel provides an authentic perspective on China gained from his master's degree at King's College London and his time at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
